Ready for a process preview? Here’s how pages come together!
SCRIPT
The Script! Ben & Emily send over a script with guidelines on what they want on the page. Scripts can vary between very detailed descriptions with links to scientific websites explaining how something works, to just a few sentences describing a scene.
THUMBNAILS
Thumbnails! Holy cow, those are some loose drawings. This stage is basically to just show a basic layout, especially where all the characters are and how the dialogue fits in with the images. Some things will be changed between this part and the next (like the dialogue). Bur don’t worry, it won’t look like this for long!
PENCILS
Pencils! More defined lines, on their way to being finalized after edits from the team. For me, it’s easier to draw the background in one color and characters in another.
INKS
Inks! These are the final lines that will appear in the book, along with…
COLORS
Colors! Adrian very kindly placed basic colors so I could come in and do the fun stuff, like shadows, lighting, and effects! There’s one last bit, and that’s…
LETTERS
Letters! Thom adds in word balloons, lettering, and sound effects.
Of course, a whole lot of work goes in after this too! Production artists, graphic designers, pre-press techs, our editor (thank you Grace!), printers, and a bunch of other people pull together to get the book printed and on the shelves. What a process!
